Noch dazu von Prominenten. Zum von Beispiel Thomas D. (Musiker und Bandmitglied bei den Fantastischen Vier) oder von William Alan Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk des Raumschiffs Enterprise). Diese Frage beinhaltet gleichzeitig eine Aufforderung. „Such dir ein Hobby, Baby“, könnte der Appell lauten. „Aber such dir das richtige Hobby, nämlich WoW.“

  • The Opel-Magna Debacle: A Disgrace for the Populists

    4 Nov 2009 | 9:32 am
Magna, Magna, Magna. German politicians became so transfixed on one solution in the crisis at Opel that they fell into the populism trap and lost touch with reality. Now the government in Berlin is being shown, painfully, that it can't force General Motors into a deal it doesn't want. The episode shows the German government faces in trying to save companies.

  • 1989 changed the world. But where now for Europe? | Timothy Garton Ash

    Timothy Garton Ash
    4 Nov 2009 | 3:00 pm
Year of revolutions: Mired in the narcissism of minor difference, Europe is failing to face up to the world its revolution helped to createNineteen eighty-nine was the biggest year in world history since 1945. In international politics, 1989 changed everything. It led to the end of communism in Europe, of the Soviet Union, the cold war and the short 20th century. It opened the door to German unification, a historically unprecedented European Union stretching from Lisbon to Tallinn, the enlargement of Nato, two decades of American supremacy, globalisation, and the rise of Asia. The one thing…

    Nils Pratley
    4 Nov 2009 | 12:34 pm
Totally unacceptable, said Germany's economic minister about the General Motors decision to scrap the sale of its European car business. Totally understandable is nearer the mark. The deal to sell Opel and Vauxhall to Magna, a Canadian car parts supplier backed by Russian money, was a transaction born out of desperation when GM was in the financial emergency room and global trade was shrinking. As with Rio Tinto's back-against-the-wall acceptance of a $20bn injection from Chinalco of China, the logic collapsed as soon as stability in the global economy returned and a whiff of growth could be…

    2 Nov 2009 | 10:39 am
Today is a big day for the German banking world, as new terms and conditions have come into effect for almost every bank in the country.  This has some particular implications for those who make transfers between accounts. Behind the new conditions is an EU directive which is meant to make transfers and direct debits between accounts throughout the continent easier, fairer and quicker.  Some of these rules where already in place in Germany, but others are new. And whilst transfers may still not be common in some countries, most of Germany uses them to make payments, using either a…

You’d think that the new Government in Germany would have more serious problems to work on than whether or not to keep Daylight Saving Time.  The economy, for example.  It appears not. A brief history: Summertime (Sommerzeit) it its current form has only been around in Germany since 1980 – partly to catch up with its neighbours in the west who had introduced it during the 1970s to save energy.  Amazingly, both West and East Germany introduced it at the same time! The dates for changing to and from summertime were not however the same as those used in the UK, leading to both…

    30 Oct 2009 | 10:33 am
When I first moved to Germany 13 years ago, pretty much no one celebrated Halloween, and pumpkins were difficult to find. But times are a-changing and my German husband carved his first jack-o-lantern today. The kids were fascinated by what came out of the pumpkin before carving, and I had forgotten how orange and eerie a pumpkin glows when lit by a candle. One thing I do like about having children is having a reason to celebrate some of the holiday traditions that I otherwise probably would just ignore.I had to smile when I saw these treats at the German bakery today. Of course I'm a sucker…

OK, so with the first new week of school and all the changes that are happening with the kids, I wanted to share some of the things the kids have shared with me as they have come home from school.*Monday was the first day of School. And Shantal and Spencer have to ride the public bus to school as there is only an Elementary School in the city we live. They have to leave the house at 7am to

Monday the kids had their first day of school. And it was a big first day for most of the kids. Four of the kids started new schools. So it was an exciting day, to say the least.Shantal started the 5th grade at the Gesamptschule Heiligenhaus. Spencer started the 5th grade at the Gymnasium in Heiligenhaus. Hannah started the 3rd grade in the same Grundschule she has been in for two years.

  • Oktoberfest 2009 day 16: Das Schützen Festzelt

    Jul
    3 Nov 2009 | 12:49 am
Somehow we managed to survive another whole Oktoberfest, concluding with a day in the Schützen Festzelt. This is the largest tent at Oktoberfest, and they really know how to pack in the people. As we were ordering up our first round of beers the tent shook with a mighty loud boom. Everyone jumped a bit except for the waitress, who calmly explained that they were doing some last-day-of-Oktoberfest ceremonial shooting over on the steps to the Bavaria statue, right next to the tent. There were more booms to come, so we might as well get used to it.The feel and atmosphere inside the Schützen…
  • Oktoberfest 2009 day 13: Weinzelt, good and bad

    Jul
    1 Nov 2009 | 4:49 am
After a couple nice visits last year, I was really looking forward to our evening reservation at the Weinzelt this year. Overall it was a fabulously fun Oktoberfest night, but my esteem for this tent has dropped considerably. I'll have to be on the lookout for a new favorite. The main reason I love the Weinzelt is because almost all of the tables are booths, meaning there is a nice barrier between you and the asses of the drunk, sweaty, squirmy guys sitting at the table behind you. This little detail increases my enjoyment of a long session at Oktoberfest considerably. Another nice touch is…

Anyone know where I found these adorable cross walk signs? I mean, they're not quite as awesome as the East German Ampelmänner, but they're still pretty cute.Put your guess in the comments. Maybe there will be a prize for those who get it right, or for those with the best answers.UPDATE: We have a winner! Eva guessed correctly; these little guys are found in Andorra. More about our trip there soon.

    23 Oct 2009 | 6:57 am
I was happy to finally get back to Bolzano (Bozen in German), a city where we spent some time many years ago and completely loved it. At the time we were living in Italy and found Bolzano's German-ness to be novel and charming; this time around it was the Italian side we were more interested in. Although the locals supposedly prefer German, the city feels almost perfectly bilingual, and almost every conversation I had involved exchanges in both Italian and German.Luckily it wasn't too hard to find enough Italian details in Bolzano to completely delight me. Bolzano's cafes serve real espresso…

  • Audi: How they are cleaning up with diesel

    4 Nov 2009 | 12:18 pm
Interesting interview here with Johan de Nysschen, president of Audi's U.S. division, about their diesel strategy. For luxury carmakers, the economic downturn has been particularly harsh. But Audi has withstood the downturn better than most — the automaker's sales are down 9.6% in the U.S. this year, compared with an overall slide of 26.7% for all luxury cars. Still, Johan de Nysschen, president

  • VW Tiguan: More spy shots of the facelift

    4 Nov 2009 | 12:04 pm
We found more spy shots of the upcoming facelift for the VW Tiguan. The front seen here is the definitive Tiguan facelight with a long, narrow grill and elongated headlights. In fact, it looks just like the Golf. The rear should follow suit with no dramatic changes as it continues the family feeling theme. We should see some new engines, possibly the new 1.6-litre TDI and the 2-litre TSI with

    4 Nov 2009 | 11:59 am
Another interesting read about the VW Scirocco R. How does the new VW Scirocco ride? Like an over-firm pogo stick? Nope. One of the key reasons for awarding this car five stars (it's that good) is its well modulated ride. The same pneumatically operated, three-way dampers feature, allowing Comfort and Sport modes, and it rides far better than a bobbly Focus RS or Audi S3. Body control is never

Interesting driving report here of the VW Golf TDI. There goes another one -- a Mercedes-Benz S-class, doing at least 100 mph, shoulders aside my Volkswagen Golf TDI on a rain-lashed German autobahn. It's not like I can't keep up, as the diesel-driven Golf will soon prove. But for now, I'm transfixed by the trip computer, which displays a Toyota Prius-like 52 mpg, the result of a long 60-mph
